In New York City, two undocumented immigrants have been charged in connection to the shooting of an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer. The suspects, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez and Cristian Aybar Berroa, both Dominican nationals, were apprehended following the violent encounter that occurred in Fort Washington Park.
Mora Nunez, aged 21, faces a serious allegation of possessing ammunition as an illegal alien, which could lead to a 15-year prison term. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Aybar-Berroa is charged as an accessory after the fact, potentially resulting in a seven-and-a-half-year sentence. The charges were confirmed by Jay Clayton, the Interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Ricky J. Patel, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New York.
Reports indicate that Mora Nunez fired upon the officer, injuring him before fleeing the scene on a motorbike driven by Aybar-Berroa, who allegedly attempted to dispose of incriminating clothing linked to the crime. Both individuals reportedly entered the U.S. unlawfully and have prior histories of criminal activities, including involvement in robberies previous to this attack.
The incident has triggered discussions around immigration policies, particularly regarding the release of undocumented individuals back into communities despite existing legal orders for their removal.
