Federal immigration authorities reported that numerous migrants detained in Los Angeles last week had notable criminal pasts, with some involved in serious offenses like assault and drug-related crimes. On a single day, Friday, nearly 45 individuals were apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a series of raids conducted at various locations, including Home Depot stores and a fashion district warehouse. This crackdown resulted in over 100 migrant arrests throughout the week.
Among those detained, a man was promptly returned to Mexico after being apprehended at a Home Depot. During the ensuing protests against the arrests, David Huerta, the president of SEIU California, was arrested on charges related to obstructing a federal agent.
ICE executed a search warrant at the fashion district warehouse following a judicial finding of probable cause regarding the use of fraudulent documents for employment. Furthermore, on Saturday, President Donald Trump mobilized California National Guard troops in response to tensions escalating between federal agents and demonstrators.
Among the individuals detained were Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, a repeat offender with a long sentence for serious charges; Jose Gregorio Medranda Ortiz, involved in drug conspiracy; Armando Ordaz, linked to gang activities; Victor Mendoza-Aguilar, a gang member with multiple assault convictions; and Delfino Aguilar-Martinez, previously charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Each case highlights troubling backgrounds that prompted their detection and arrest by immigration officials.
