The Ministry of Legal Affairs, in partnership with the Judiciary of Guyana and UNICEF, has launched an advanced Childrenās Court at the Charity Magistrateās Court, serving the Essequibo Magisterial District and nearby areas.
This groundbreaking project is part of a larger $72 million initiative that included the full renovation of the Charity Magistrateās Court. Enhancements comprised a new annex, fencing, updated electrical systems, modernized courtrooms, and new restroom facilities.
During the opening ceremony, led by Attorney-General Mohabir Anil Nandlall and Chancellor Roxane George, Nandlall emphasized this court’s unique position as the first of its kind in Essequibo, affirming the governmentās dedication to the welfare of children as the nationās most precious asset. “Our greatest investment is in our children,” he stated, highlighting the importance of nurturing their growth and education.
Nandlall reiterated the commitment to modernizing child custody and adoption laws and ensuring the protection of children’s rights, as Guyana adheres to critical UN protocols. The establishment of this court stems from the 2018 Juvenile Justice Act, aimed at providing rehabilitation and restorative justice for juveniles.
UNICEFās Gabriel Vockel recognized the occasion as a landmark achievement for child protection in Guyana, supporting Sustainable Development Goal 16 for justice and strong institutions. The regional chairperson expressed optimism that this court would enhance justice for over 15,000 children in the region.
Judicial leaders underscored the transformative impact of the court, reflecting a commitment to child rights and rehabilitation. Chief Justice Roxane George noted that it is the third specialized Childrenās Court in Guyana, aligning with the national goal of inclusive legal progress.
