As Guyana diligently pursues its ambitious socio-economic agenda, President Dr. Irfaan Ali highlighted the significant contribution of Chinese nationals to the nation’s advancement.
During a reception celebrating the 53rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Guyana and China, President Ali emphasized the growing friendship between the two nations. He stated, “Guyana is dedicated to fostering a unified society that promotes inclusivity, equity, and opportunity for everyone. Our ‘One Guyana’ initiative affirms that all individuals who contribute to our nation’s development, regardless of their nationality, are both welcomed and valued.”
He acknowledged that Chinese nationals residing in Guyana are vital to its national development. Over the past 53 years, the relationship has evolved into a strong partnership rooted in mutual trust and economic collaboration.
Guyana, which was among the first English-speaking Caribbean nations to recognize the People’s Republic of China shortly after its independence, has built a resilient friendship with China despite the geographical distance.
Currently, cooperation has surged, with bilateral trade reaching $1.4 billion in 2024—a remarkable 14.3 percent increase from the previous year. Additionally, China’s investment in Guyana escalated from $256 million in 2019 to $10.6 billion in 2024.
Prominent projects like the New Demerara River Bridge and several regional hospitals embody the enduring China-Guyana partnership. Chinese enterprises have also contributed by creating nearly 5,000 local jobs and engaging in public welfare initiatives.
Furthermore, since 1993, the Chinese government has sent 20 medical teams to Guyana, treating millions and conducting thousands of surgeries. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Guyana has enhanced cultural exchanges and supported local talent development.
In this framework of partnership, Guyana continues to strengthen its role in international affairs while enjoying the robust support of China.
