Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna reported on Friday that almost a dozen deputies suffered injuries during ongoing protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These riots began on June 6, coinciding with ICE operations in the area, with protesters reportedly using rocks, Molotov cocktails, and high-grade fireworks as weapons against law enforcement.
During a press briefing, Sheriff Luna highlighted the distinction between peaceful demonstrators and those intent on violence, remarking on the severity of the situation faced by deputies. He referred to the activities of individuals targeting officers as concerning and emphasized the need to maintain public safety.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that the LAPD is prepared for the anticipated large demonstrations and is strategically deploying resources to protect the rights of peaceful protestors while curbing potential violence. He asserted, “If you come to our city with the intent to commit crimes, you will be arrested. We will not allow violence to undermine peaceful demonstrations.” Hundreds have been arrested since the protests began, and a curfew is in effect to help restore order and limit nighttime criminal activity.
As law enforcement remains vigilant, the overall aim is to maintain safety and order amidst the growing unrest in the city.
