As KLM Royal Dutch Airlines launches its new route from Amsterdam to Georgetown, President Dr. Irfaan Ali of Guyana underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the aviation sector. This development is poised to create opportunities for locals while offering a first-class experience for international visitors.
At a reception marking this inaugural flight, President Ali expressed that the new connection to a major global hub will significantly benefit both travellers and the broader economy. He highlighted the positive impact of aviation on GDP, noting it contributed approximately $US160 million and created over 5,200 jobs, facilitating the transport of more than 13,000 tonnes of cargo in 2023.
Two years ago, Guyana processed about 182,000 passengers, a figure that has skyrocketed to nearly 857,000 today, indicating remarkable growth within the sector. However, Dr. Ali stressed that aviation development requires strategic planning rather than mere assumptions. Investments in infrastructure, from expanded runways to new hotels, aim to enhance connectivity and economic vibrancy.
With plans for a second terminal at Cheddi Jagan International Airport underway, the government is focused on creating a seamless travel experience, where major services are within a 25-minute radius. Electronic advancements, including a digitised entry system with e-passports, further solidify this commitment to a world-class experience.
As Guyana reinforces its status as a significant aeronautical hub, KLM’s entry heralds new opportunities for local farmers and agro-processors to access international markets, showcasing Guyana’s growing prominence in the global aviation landscape.
