Documentary creators Julia Willoughby Nason and Michael Gasparro are exploring the heart-wrenching case of Emily Schwarz Ferlazzo in their new docuseries, American Murder: Gabby Petito, which has the support of her family.
Joseph Ferlazzo returned home unexpectedly from a Vermont camping trip meant to celebrate his and Emily’s first wedding anniversary, claiming that a disagreement led to Emily deciding to return to New Hampshire alone. However, Emily’s mother, Adrienne Bass, found Ferlazzo’s behavior suspicious.
She remarked, “When he handed me her license, that was very strange.” Reflecting on his nervousness, she suspected it stemmed from anxiety about deceiving them rather than the cold weather during his motorcycle ride. Bass described his demeanor as threatening, causing a chilling sense of fear throughout the family.
The tragic fate of 22-year-old Emily, murdered on October 16, 2021, is featured in an episode of Investigation Discovery’s true-crime series, Fatal Destination, where Bass expressed her growing concerns about Joseph’s abusive tendencies. “We were all afraid of him,” she shared. Emily had previously sought help from her family, only to return to an increasingly toxic environment.
Bass discussed her apprehension during a restaurant lunch prior to the trip, feeling an intense need to communicate her worries about Joseph to her daughter. Despite her efforts, she could never find the right words. Tragically, it was her daughter’s life that was in danger all along, a realization that weighs heavily on Bass.
