The Guyanese government is set to improve operations for local fishermen in Goed Fortuin, Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) by establishing processing and storage facilities. This initiative was unveiled by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during an engagement with local fisherfolk on Tuesday, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha and other technical staff.
To kick off the enhancements, rehabilitation of a non-functioning koker will begin, alongside the installation of lighting and the construction of a walkway. The fisherfolk were assured that remedial works have started following the awarding of contracts to enhance their working environment. President Ali emphasized the government’s ongoing support for the fishing community under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic [PPP/C].
Furthermore, President Ali proposed expanding operations in the production of prawns, shrimp, and crabs, suggesting a focus on boosting local aquaculture: “This same mangrove here will give you more money from crab, cage crabbing than the farm,” he stated. He assured that the government would fund the required processing facilities, allowing fishermen to package their products locally.
At another recent community session, the President discussed developing agriculture and food production strategies tailored to various regions, highlighting the importance of collaboration among officials, farmers, and stakeholders. He emphasized that direct cash transfers and incentives to farmers would continue, aiming to enhance income and productivity in the sector.
