Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has emphasized the necessity for government employees to receive an 8% salary increase ahead of the upcoming General and Regional elections scheduled for September 1, 2025. During a recent press conference conducted by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Jagdeo expressed his desire for the Finance Minister, Ashni Singh, to ensure that this increase is disbursed prior to the elections.
“It’s illogical to pay public servants only after the elections, so I believe it will be arranged to be paid beforehand,” Jagdeo stated in response to media inquiries. This salary adjustment comes as part of a multi-year agreement that was reached last year between the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), ensuring all public servants will receive their designated increase in the current year.
Previously, Ashni Singh confirmed that public employees will gain the full benefit of the mandated 8% raise this year. This development points to the government’s commitment toward enhancing the salaries of its workforce as they approach an important electoral period.
