Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that two suspects in the tragic death of 18-year-old Air Force cadet candidate Ava Moore are illegal immigrants from Venezuela. During a press conference, Joshua Johnson, acting field director for ICE in Dallas, revealed that 21-year-olds Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and Maikel Coello Perozo were involved in the jet ski hit-and-run incident that claimed Moore’s life on Memorial Day weekend in Grapevine Lake.
Moore, a future Air Force Academy cadet from the Class of 2029, was reportedly killed when Gonzalez was operating the jet ski. Johnson mentioned that both suspects had crossed the southern border recently, arrested upon entry and later released. ICE has since filed immigration detainers against them, noting they will face removal proceedings following their criminal cases.
Gonzalez is charged with second-degree felony manslaughter, while Perozo faces misdemeanor charges for his involvement in the hit-and-run and obstructing law enforcement. Both suspects were apprehended in Dallas, with their relationship still unclear.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expressed condolences for Moore’s family, highlighting the concern over illegal immigration and its implications. He reaffirmed ongoing efforts between various law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served in this heart-wrenching case.
Moore was on the cusp of beginning her military career, having excelled as a student and athlete at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado.
