Jim Daly, the President and CEO of Focus on the Family, recently spoke with Fox News Digital about the serious ramifications for his organization following the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) classification of them as a “hate group.” He described the label as both “discouraging” and “dangerous,” reflecting significant cultural issues.
Founded in 1977 by Dr. James Dobson, Focus on the Family is a prominent Christian nonprofit based in Colorado that provides various services including counseling and parenting resources. With a reach of six million radio listeners and millions more digitally, the group aims to support parents through a foundation grounded in Christian values.
Daly criticized the SPLC’s decision, suggesting it demonstrates the cultural intolerance towards differing opinions, especially regarding traditional views of marriage as between one man and one woman. He emphasized that while societal views may evolve, Focus on the Family will not compromise its biblical principles.
He expressed concern over the real-world risks associated with such labels, recalling the 2012 shooting at a similar organization, the Family Research Council, which was targeted due to its SPLC classification. Daly stressed the immediate consequences of the SPLC’s announcement, noting that protestors appeared outside their headquarters within 24 hours, prompting increased security measures.
Ultimately, Daly advocates for dialogue rather than division, reiterating that their mission is driven by love, not hate.
