The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is a vital institution in our region, yet it struggles with a lack of full support. Attorney-General Anil Nandlall has called on Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations to adopt the court’s appellate jurisdiction, emphasizing its significance as a pillar of regional unity and judicial independence.
With only five CARICOM member states having adopted the CCJ, Trinidad and Tobago’s reluctance to replace the Privy Council remains a concern. Guyana, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, and Saint Lucia have shown leadership by signing on to the court, but more can be done to strengthen regional integration.
As Dr. Christopher Arif Bulkan takes his oath as the newest CCJ judge, it’s clear that this institution has value in our jurisdiction. The Attorney-General urges CARICOM nations to join forces and demonstrate their commitment to regional unity. It’s time for us to take a step forward and support this premier institution.
