The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) announced on Thursday that political parties collaborating to merge their votes must finalize how they will distribute any seats they secure in the National Assembly ahead of the elections.
According to GECOM, establishing an electoral quota is essential for these combined parties, determining fair allocation based on total valid votes received divided by the total seats available. For instance, with 650,000 valid votes, a party would require 10,000 votes to earn a single seat, while with only 325,000 votes, 5,000 votes would suffice.
Specifically for joint lists, the votes from all parties in the alliance are summarized and divided by the established quota to allocate the respective seats. In instances where only one seat is obtained by the coalition, it will be awarded to the party with the highest overall vote count, eliminating any options for seat rotation.
To illustrate, if the Orange Party secures six seats, the Purple Party three, the Pink Party two, and the Blue Party one, agreeing on an equal distribution would mean that each of the four factions ends up with four seats. This guideline follows prior disputes involving the last three joint parties in the 2020 elections.
Moreover, each party maintains its own Representative and Deputy Representative responsible for selecting candidates to join the National Assembly, thereby ensuring shared representation within the coalition.
