Georgetown, Guyana (November 14, 2025) – The Government has officially commissioned a new hydropower project in Kato, Region 8, which promises to transform the community and region’s energy landscape.
The Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips, emphasized that no community will be forgotten and no Guyanese will be left behind as the country works towards an energy mix prioritizing renewable generation. This milestone project is part of a nationwide transformation in Guyana’s energy infrastructure and equitable development.
Approximately 75% of the workforce that built the facility came from Kato and neighbouring communities, highlighting the local impact of the project. Thirty-four community buildings will be supplied by the hydropower system, transforming daily life for residents.
The Prime Minister also announced that seventeen residents of Kato will be permanently employed to operate the plant around the clock, with eight operators already receiving specialist training.
He encouraged the residents of Kato to use the new plant as a source of power and unity, empowering them to build businesses, strengthen education, support health services, and expand their opportunities.
The project is just one part of Guyana’s energy upgrade, which includes the addition of 186.2 MW from existing plants and a planned 300 MW gas-to-energy project. The Government has also invested in hinterland renewables, with hydropower plants, solar farms, and solar home systems distributed across the country.
The Prime Minister congratulated the people of Kato, thanked the local workforce, and reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to building an energy-secure, modern, and unified nation.
