The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has been renamed after President Donald Trump in a move that has sparked outrage among Democrats and Kennedy family members.
A lawsuit filed by Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty claims that the renaming was done without Congressional approval, citing a law that requires any name changes to be made through an act of Congress. The centre’s board, which was packed with Trump allies, voted to rename it in honour of the former President, sparking widespread criticism.
The White House has defended the move, stating that Trump had ‘stepped up’ and saved the Kennedy Center from financial difficulties and restored its grandeur.
The renaming has been met with harsh criticism, particularly from the Kennedy family, who see it as an attempt to erase the legacy of President Kennedy. Several members of the family have taken to social media to express their outrage at the move, with some likening it to trying to rename the Lincoln Memorial.
