Renowned Kenyan activist, Boniface Mwangi, has been charged with illegal possession of ammunition tied to protests that resulted in the death of 19 individuals last month. Mwangi has denied the accusations and has been granted bail. Contrary to earlier police statements, he was not charged with facilitating terrorist acts.
Authorities conducted a search of Mwangi’s home and office, where they confiscated various electronic devices and items such as tear gas canisters. His arrest ignited widespread condemnation from human rights groups who viewed it as an attempt to silence dissent. In response to the allegations, Mwangi asserted on social media, “I am not a terrorist.”
The charges stem from anti-government protests on June 25, where a report from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights indicated that 19 protesters were killed, predominantly due to police shootings. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen characterized the demonstrations as “terrorism disguised as dissent,” citing attacks on police stations and officers.
In the aftermath of Mwangi’s arrest, a coalition of 37 rights organizations criticized the “unjustified terrorism charges,” warning of a broader crackdown on dissent in Kenya. Veteran politician James Orengo condemned the charges against Mwangi, emphasizing that young protesters are not terrorists. Mwangi, a noted figure in Kenya’s activism scene, has faced detainment multiple times in the past. He advocates for social justice, having made headlines for some of his bold protest tactics.
