A South African woman has received a life sentence after being convicted of kidnapping and trafficking her six-year-old daughter. Racquel “Kelly” Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis, and their associate Steveno van Rhyn were all sentenced following a high-profile trial that began over a year after Joshlin Smith disappeared in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February 2024.
Although a widespread search was conducted, Joshlin has not been located, and prosecutors suggested that she might have been sold into slavery. Smith, who struggled with drug addiction, reportedly sought financial gain through these actions. The sentencing drew significant attention, as Judge Nathan Erasmus emphasized the seriousness of their crimes, stating, “There is nothing that I can find that is redeeming or deserving of a lesser sentence.” He highlighted the devastating impact on the local community.
Despite the gravity of the situation, all three defendants showed little emotion during the sentencing process held in a community center to accommodate local residents. The National Prosecuting Authority praised the outcome, citing evidence that Joshlin was sold for exploitation purposes.
As the search for Joshlin continues, her family remains devastated. Her grandmother, Amanda Smith-Daniels, expressed deep sorrow, stating that no sentence would bring her granddaughter back, and urged Kelly to reveal her child’s whereabouts.
The trial saw testimonies from over 30 witnesses, revealing the troubling circumstances surrounding Joshlin’s life and disappearance.
