Prioritizing water safety, a Lifeguard Certification course commenced at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, gathering an impressive cohort of 40 participants.
This week-long program is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport along with the National Sports Commission, in partnership with the Canadian Lifesaving Society. During the opening ceremony, Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle highlighted the promise made by Minister Charles Ramson Jr. to the swimming community for such a course, emphasizing its importance.
Ninvalle expressed his satisfaction at the growth of the program, which jumped from 15 participants in its initial iteration in 2024 to 40 in the current session. He recognized swimming coach Paul Mahaica for his crucial contribution to the course, collaborating with both the Ministry and the Sports Commission to bring qualified experts to Guyana.
According to Ninvalle, the certification will enhance job prospects in Guyana’s evolving job market. The training is being led by Tamara Wood and Sarah Newton, both experienced examiners and instructors from the Canadian Lifesaving Society. Notably, the course also includes training for eight local individuals as Lifesaving Trainers, equipping them to foster and teach lifeguard skills to others in the future.
