Business owners in Kansas City, Missouri, are voicing their frustration regarding the city’s inadequate response to escalating crime rates, which have significantly affected their operations. According to U.S. News and World Report, Kansas City has been ranked as the eighth-most dangerous city in America for 2024, with a substantial increase in both homicide and property crime rates. Notably, the city reported 61 homicides this year, up from 52 at the same point last year, indicating a troubling trend.
Andrew Cameron, the founder of Donutology, expressed that the current crime situation feels unprecedented. He described instances of vandalism and robberies at his establishments, including a notable break-in where a safe was stolen. Cameron criticized the local leadership, stating that bureaucratic constraints are hindering police effectiveness and leaving small business owners feeling vulnerable.
Although the city has provided funds for damage repairs, these do not compensate for stolen items, a hindrance particularly challenging for small businesses. Attorney Suzanne Hale-Robinson echoed these sentiments, noting a surge in vehicle break-ins in her vicinity and recounting incidents of squatters in her office building.
