In a significant move towards reform, over 2,000 members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will receive much-anticipated promotions starting August 1, 2025. Announced by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the police force and acknowledge the commitment of its officers.
During a recent address at GPF Headquarters, the Commander-in-Chief outlined a robust plan that includes automatic promotions, improved educational access, enhanced working conditions, and a performance-driven accountability framework. The reform aims to rectify years of stagnation where officers with decades of service have retired without proper acknowledgment.
Officers with 5-7 years of service will be promoted to Lance Corporal, while those with 10 or more years will be elevated accordingly, some even attaining the rank of Inspector based on service length and record. More than 2,000 officers are expected to benefit from new ranks and salaries beginning in August.
In addition to these promotions, all ranks are now eligible to pursue higher education at no cost, a first for the force. A new evaluation system will ensure that promotions are contingent upon accountability and community engagement.
Although the reforms are ambitious, President Ali emphasized that only those with a clean disciplinary history will qualify for these benefits, underlining the principle of responsibility in conjunction with increased rewards.
