Paris witnessed significant unrest as celebrations erupted after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) clinched their first-ever Champions League title, defeating Inter Milan 5-0. In the chaos that followed, nearly 300 individuals were arrested during clashes with police, particularly around the Champs-Elysées and Parc des Princes, where around 50,000 fans gathered to watch the epic match on big screens.
While many fans celebrated jubilantly with singing and dancing, some turned to violence, igniting flares, vandalizing property, and setting vehicles ablaze. The Eiffel Tower even lit up in PSG’s colors as the city rejoiced, prompting a supportive post from President Emmanuel Macron.
The police had prepared for these celebrations, deploying approximately 5,400 officers across Paris. Many of those detained were accused of inciting disorder and possessing fireworks. Police noted that certain individuals deliberately engaged with authorities, throwing fireworks during the festivities.
Social media footage showed attempts to breach luxury shops on the famed Champs-Elysées, leading riot police to deploy water cannons and tear gas to manage the crowds. Adding to the turmoil, a vehicle drove into a group of PSG supporters in Grenoble, injuring four, although the driver reportedly did not act with intent.
Amid the aftermath, PSG plans a victory parade on the Champs-Elysées where thousands are expected to celebrate with the team. Macron’s office announced plans to host the winning squad for a congratulatory event.
