China’s AG600 “Kunlong” amphibious aircraft has received the green light for mass production after obtaining certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This certification validates that the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) has established a quality system that conforms to airworthiness regulations, ensuring that production aligns with established design standards.
The AG600 is slightly larger than typical single-aisle airliners, measuring 38.9 meters in length, with a height of 11.7 meters and a wingspan of 38.8 meters—similar in size to the Boeing 737. This aircraft can cover a maximum range of 4,500 kilometers and has a maximum takeoff weight of 60 tonnes, making it the largest amphibious civilian aircraft globally.
Specially designed for firefighting, the AG600 features a “water-scooping bucket” that allows it to collect up to 12 tonnes of water in just 20 seconds while skimming the water’s surface. Its development reflects China’s robust capabilities in collaborative design and manufacturing for specialized aircraft.
Future developments for the AG600 will focus on enhancing emergency rescue services and disaster management capabilities in China. This initiative will further strengthen the aviation emergency rescue network and integrate the AG600 into a broader rescue equipment system.
Since its inception in 2009, the AG600 has marked several significant milestones, including its first flight in 2017, initial takeoff from a reservoir in 2018, and a successful sea flight in 2020.
