
Alfred Mekdeci has stepped down from his role as President of the Cue Sports Association of Guyana after an impactful 18 months that witnessed the establishment of the country’s inaugural official billiards body.
A pivotal figure in the enhancement of cue sports in Guyana, Mekdeci was instrumental in the association’s foundation and played a crucial role in elevating the sport’s visibility across the nation.
Throughout his presidency, Mekdeci initiated national championships aimed at improving skill levels and encouraging more structured participation in the sport. His commitment to cultivating a vibrant cue sports community has been greatly appreciated by players and fans alike.
In his own words, “It’s been a privilege to serve as the inaugural president of the Cue Sports Association. I’m proud of the strides we’ve made and confident in the association’s bright future with new leadership that can offer fresh insights.”
Successor Steven Persaud, a veteran in the cue sports arena and associated with the organization from its launch, will step into the acting presidency. He expressed his appreciation for Mekdeci’s foundational work and shared a positive outlook for the future.
Persaud remarked, “Alfred has laid an exceptional groundwork, and I’m honored to take on this responsibility. My goal is to continue the growth of cue sports in Guyana, welcoming new players and enhancing the momentum we’ve established.”
The association now enters a promising new chapter, aiming to build upon the strong foundation established by Mekdeci while striving for further advancements in the sport both locally and internationally.
Additionally, Mekdeci will remain engaged in the sport by organizing a new annual 9-Ball Championship, dubbed “King of the Slate,” anticipated to commence in August, which promises to attract talented competitors from across Guyana and ignite further interest in cue sports in the region.
