A minibus driver, aged 35, has been ordered to remain in custody following his arraignment for his alleged role in the recent bombings at the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) substation on May 17.
Seon Carmicheal, from Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, faced Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He is charged with two terrorism-related offenses but did not enter a plea.
The prosecution asserts that Carmicheal helped facilitate the bombings that occurred between May 15 and 17, 2025. His lawyer, Everton Singh-Lammy, sought bail, claiming that Carmicheal was merely a transportation provider under coercion, specifically citing threats from a suspect connected to his family.
However, police prosecutor Deniro Jones objected, highlighting that Carmicheal actively aided the attackers, even purchasing materials for the explosives. Jones emphasized the serious implications for public safety and national security, which led to the denial of bail by the magistrate.
Carmicheal is scheduled to remain in custody until June 18, 2025. Meanwhile, law enforcement has issued alerts for three additional suspects believed to be involved, characterized as Spanish-speaking individuals.
The initial explosion rocked the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost around 1:00 a.m. on May 17, causing significant structural damage, followed closely by a second attack on the GPL Substation, both highlighting alarming safety concerns in the area.
