In a passionate address at the National Road Safety Stakeholder Forum, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn expressed his distress over the disrespect faced by police officers during their daily duties. He emphasized the challenges that law enforcement encounters, stating, “I get upset when I see how disrespected the police are while they are on the road, despite occasional failings on their part.”
Benn condemned the troubling trend of individuals attempting to bribe officers or reach out to influential contacts to evade penalties. He encouraged law enforcement to maintain integrity, advising them to issue tickets without hesitation. His remarks received a positive response from the audience, highlighting a shared desire for accountability.
To enhance police efficacy and public interactions, the Minister proposed a new system allowing ticketing without individuals having to visit police facilities. He stressed the importance of creating an inviting environment in police stations, especially for those in vulnerable situations. Benn recalled a troubling experience at the Beterverwagting police station, where he observed individuals being treated disrespectfully, which he deemed unacceptable. “Even lockups should provide basic comforts such as beds and pillows,” he added.
Benn also announced ongoing initiatives aimed at improving police infrastructure and promoting transparency, including the implementation of body cameras and video surveillance in police facilities.
