Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs took to the National Assembly on Monday night to present his maiden address during the 2026 National Budget debate. In a bold move, he referred to himself as a veteran, highlighting that he didn’t need notes while delivering his presentation.
The Junior Sport Minister emphasized throughout his speech that criticism of the government must be grounded in facts, not rhetoric and fiction. He defended the administration’s record G$1.558 trillion budget, discussing the plans for the country and its people.
Jacobs responded to opposition MPs’ concerns about prioritizing infrastructure over athletes, arguing that facilities are crucial for major regional and international events. He cited the vision of President Irfaan Ali to make Guyana a hub for sports tourism, highlighting the need for necessary facilities to bring tournaments to the country.
The Minister acknowledged the importance of grassroots organizations and athlete development, but maintained that the government is working with associations to deliver on promises.
With several major infrastructural projects set to be commissioned this year, Jacobs assured the National Assembly that his administration is committed to investing in sport development.
