Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell has announced her intention to resign following a felony burglary conviction connected to a break-in at her stepmother’s residence. The Democratic Farm-to-Labor Party (DFL) member, who represents Senate District 47, will officially leave her post by August 4, according to reports from the Associated Press.
Mitchell was arrested in April 2024 after claiming she entered her stepmother Carol Mitchell’s home to retrieve her late father’s ashes and other possessions. Police bodycam footage captured her explaining her actions, where she remarked, “Clearly, I’m not good at this,” during her arrest.
In addition to burglary, she was also convicted of possessing burglary tools. During her trial, she admitted to trespassing but asserted she did not intend to steal anything, as she was concerned about her stepmother’s well-being due to her Alzheimer’s condition.
Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy expressed relief at the trial’s conclusion and confirmed that Mitchell had indicated her plans to resign if found guilty. Meanwhile, Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson has called for her immediate resignation, implying that her continued position was only upheld for political reasons.
As Senator Mitchell prepares to finalize her legislative responsibilities in the coming days, the case sheds light on the complex interplay of personal issues and public accountability within the political sphere.
