In a significant step towards bolstering its commitment to Guyana’s oil and gas sector, global offshore engineering leader Mitsui Ocean Development and Engineering Company (MODEC) inaugurated its cutting-edge office at Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre on Friday.
This modern facility not only represents MODEC’s expansion but also highlights its increasing role in Guyana’s energy framework. With lucrative contracts already in place and plans for operational expansion, MODEC anticipates the creation of over 230 jobs by 2026, primarily for local residents.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali briefly visited the newly established office, with Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, delivering a keynote speech. She emphasized that MODEC’s presence is a strong indicator of sustainable investment and confidence in the nation’s future.
Walrond praised MODEC’s 50 years of global experience in offshore energy and their reputation as a leader in floating production systems, essential for deep-water oil extraction. The new office features six meeting rooms named after Indigenous groups, a training room, and other contemporary facilities designed to support onshore operations and talent development.
Rafael Fumis, MODEC Guyana’s Country Manager, expressed pride in inaugurating the office, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s journey. He noted that since first engaging with Guyana nearly a decade ago, the establishment of the office reflects MODEC’s deep understanding of the local business landscape. Fumis also mentioned ongoing partnerships with over 40 local firms and the upcoming Offshore Trainee Programme aimed at providing essential industry training for Guyanese.
