A senior official from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has alleged that Ethiopian government troops “executed” three of their aid workers during a humanitarian mission in Tigray four years ago. Raquel Ayora, MSF Spain’s general director, reported to the BBC that a Spanish national and two Ethiopians were murdered at close range amidst the Tigray conflict, which has since concluded.
On June 24, 2021, MSF workers MarÃa Hernández Matas, Yohannes Halefom Reda, and Tedros Gebremariam were on a mission in Tigray to evaluate medical needs when they were shot. Ayora emphasized that they were clearly identifiable as humanitarian workers and that their travel route was communicated to local military factions beforehand. Despite reaching out to the Ethiopian government for four years, MSF claimed they received no credible explanation for the killings.
MSF’s findings also indicate that at the time of the murders, aid workers faced escalating hostility from Ethiopian and Eritrean armed forces. Witness reports included details of military officers ordering the shooting of the approaching vehicle with MSF logos. Unfortunately, the repercussions of these events have been profoundly felt, particularly by the families of the deceased, including the mother of Matas, who lost her only child, and the widow of Gebremariam, who named her newborn after his colleague in memory.
