Former President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria is set to be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, located in the northern Katsina state, as confirmed by Governor Dikko Radda. Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London clinic at the age of 82.
His body will be flown back to Nigeria, arriving before midday local time, and the home of the late leader is already filled with family, friends, and other mourners in anticipation of his arrival. The government has declared Tuesday as a public holiday to commemorate Buhari, who holds the distinction of being one of the only two individuals in Nigeria’s history to serve as both a military and a democratically elected president.
A series of tributes have emerged, including praise from former President Goodluck Jonathan, who honored Buhari’s dedication and service to the nation. Additionally, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, who once led a coup against Buhari, acknowledged his exemplary character even in retirement.
The funeral will include an official military ceremony and Islamic prayers in Daura, with all national flags being lowered to half-mast as part of a seven-day mourning period declared by current President Bola Tinubu, who plans to personally receive Buhari’s remains at the Katsina airport.
