Bhoomi Chauhan, a 28-year-old business administration student living in Bristol, experienced a terrifying turn of events after traffic delays caused her to miss her Air India flight to London Gatwick by a mere 10 minutes. Having traveled to western India for a vacation, Chauhan arrived at Ahmedabad airport just after boarding was set to begin.
Despite checking in online, airline staff denied her boarding due to her late arrival, leaving her frustrated and disappointed. “If I had started a little early, I would have boarded the plane,” she lamented. After departing the airport in dismay and discussing ticket refunds with a travel agent, she received the shocking news that her flight, AI171, had crashed shortly after take-off.
The tragic accident resulted in the loss of 241 passengers and 12 crew members, with additional fatalities on the ground. Survivors included British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh, who was hospitalized with injuries. Among the deceased were multiple British citizens, including families from Gloucester and London.
As emergency services worked tirelessly to recover and investigate the scene, Chauhan reflected on her harrowing narrow escape, calling it a miracle that she was not on the ill-fated flight.
