Australia has revoked the visa of a South African man who was seen attending a neo-Nazi rally outside an Australian state parliament.
Matthew Gruter, a 60-year-old civil engineer, took part in the protest against Jewish people on November 8th. The protest was organized by the National Socialist Network, a well-known neo-Nazi group in Australia.
The rally drew attention for its hateful slogans and chants, including ‘blood and honour’, which are associated with the Hitler Youth.
Australia has seen a recent surge in right-wing extremism, and the government has taken steps to address it. The National Socialist Network’s actions have been widely condemned by Australian officials and community leaders.
Gruter’s visa was revoked after he demonstrated ‘hatred and wrecked the household’, according to Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke. Gruter had moved to Australia with his wife in 2022 and worked as a civil engineer.
The decision to revoke Gruter’s visa has been seen as a necessary measure to protect Australian values and prevent the spread of hate speech.
