Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the military has “eliminated” Mohammed Sinwar, a prominent Hamas figure and brother of the late Yahya Sinwar. The targeted airstrike, executed on May 13, aimed at an area surrounding the European hospital in Khan Younis, destroying Hamas’s underground network. Local sources indicate that the attack resulted in 28 casualties, though Hamas has not confirmed Sinwar’s death.
Mohammed Sinwar, aged 49, had been affiliated with Hamas since its inception in the late 1980s, progressing to commander of the Khan Younis Brigade by 2005. He gained notoriety for his involvement in significant events, including the 2006 abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, and played a role in planning the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that initiated a military response from the Israeli government.
During a parliamentary debate on the status of the ongoing conflict, Netanyahu highlighted achievements within the last 600 days of military operations, emphasizing Israel’s efforts to curb Hamas’s influence. He confirmed that while not all information had been verified, intelligence suggested Sinwar’s elimination was successful.
The airstrike has drawn international attention, with UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemning the civilian losses associated with military actions. Netanyahu also reiterated the commitment to recovering hostages held by Hamas, disclosing that about 20 are confirmed alive, while up to 38 are believed dead.
