Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to securing the safe return of the remaining dead hostages still held captive in Gaza. During a memorial ceremony for victims of the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, Netanyahu emphasized his determination to bring closure to families who have lost loved ones.
The prime minister’s remarks came hours after Hamas returned two more bodies to the International Committee of the Red Cross, bringing the total number of recovered remains to nine out of 28. However, the Israeli government is still awaiting the return of the remaining 19 hostages, which has sparked widespread outrage in Israel.
Netanyahu reiterated his government’s stance that terrorism will not be tolerated and vowed to take ‘full force’ against any entity that threatens Israel’s security. The prime minister also expressed his willingness to resume military action if Israel is attacked again.
The Israeli military has been conducting a campaign in Gaza since the October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the capture of 251 hostages. The conflict has left thousands dead and injured on both sides, with the UN estimating that at least 67,967 people have lost their lives in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then.
