A state-of-the-art Board of Industrial Training (BIT) Skills Development and Certification Centre has been launched in Corriverton, Region Six, with an investment of $55.4 million. This facility is designed to enhance access to technical and vocational training for the Guyanese population, addressing the increasing need for a skilled workforce, as highlighted in a Ministry of Finance press release.
Since 2020, the BIT has successfully trained over 82,000 people and created more than 60,000 job opportunities through its educational and job-readiness initiatives. The Ministry continues to bolster community-based Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) with the construction of such facilities; a previous $44.8 million skills centre was inaugurated earlier this year in the same region.
During the commissioning, Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh emphasized Guyana’s rapid economic growth, predicting a surge in job creation and entrepreneurial options. He stated, “Now is the time to launch a small business and access employment opportunities, especially with the free training available in sectors such as food preparation and electrical installation.”
Dr. Singh also noted that educational opportunities are fully funded from nursery through university, supporting significant economic growth through training and skill certification. In Region Six alone, the BIT has dedicated more than $1.14 billion from 2020 to 2025 to train over 15,000 individuals, with nearly 3,000 participants reported from the region. This extensive training program reaches over 35 villages, collaborating with local organizations and private institutes in various fields.
