A former federal prison warden has criticized inadequate security measures at a New Orleans jail, which allowed a notorious escape artist and nine others to break free. Cameron Lindsay, who has two decades of experience in the federal prison system, described the facility’s operations as a “train wreck” during an interview with Fox News Digital.
Lindsay pointed out that the lack of basic security checks led inmates to manipulate infrastructure, exemplified by their ability to detach a toilet from the wall and access the perimeter fence directly. Such oversights are alarming, he remarked.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO) has been under a federal consent decree since 2013 due to civil rights violations, requiring enhanced oversight and compliance assessments. The most recent report highlights that the jail met full compliance with only 42% of the decree stipulations, with roughly 53% partially compliant and concerning noncompliance of at least 5%.
Signs of significant violence, such as inmate assaults and drug use, were prevalent, suggesting a troubling culture where inmates act with impunity. Reports of extortion and “tank bosses” within the facility further complicate matters.
With a breakdown in monitoring procedures, the early morning jailbreak on May 17 revealed critical security failures. As authorities continue their search for the fleeing inmates, five remain at large, raising serious questions about the leadership and funding behind the jail’s operations.
