Prime Minister Brigadier (Retβd) Mark Phillips recently inaugurated a 750-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar farm in the Wakenaam Power Plant compound, promising to meet and exceed the island’s current energy requirements. This innovative project is seen as a pivotal step for Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) and signifies the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
The hybrid energy system combines solar power with existing diesel generation, ensuring reliability and sustainability. Funded by the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund with an investment of $2.3 million, the solar farm is equipped with state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) modules, inverters, and battery storage systems to stabilize the grid and harness excess energy.
With power reserves at an all-time high, PM Phillips encouraged local investments in tourism, agriculture, and small-scale enterprises, highlighting the government’s commitment to renewable energy through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). This ambitious initiative aims to empower communities with reliable energy, enhancing both household use and commercial activities.
PM Phillips expressed confidence that Guyana could emerge as a power-secure nation that might even export electricity to neighboring countries. He also announced plans for another solar farm in Leguan, reaffirming the government’s focus on people-centered development and sustainable power solutions across the country.
Additionally, GPL’s Executive Management has promised to innovate and expand its renewable energy offerings, establishing a smarter and more inclusive grid for Guyana’s future.
