The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has officially established a work plan in preparation for the upcoming General and Regional Elections set to take place on September 1, 2025. This announcement was made following the Commission’s statutory meeting on May 29. GECOM stated that political parties aiming to participate in the elections must submit their Lists of Candidates by July 14, 2025, designated as Nomination Day.
Additionally, parties must apply for the allocation of electoral symbols by June 22, 2025. To finalize the Official List of Electors, a quick Claims and Objections exercise will occur from June 16 to June 20, enabling eligible citizens, aged 18 or older by June 30, to register.
Voters who have changed their addresses must vote at their previous polling stations to ensure compliance. GECOM is focused on implementing measures to guarantee that the electoral process is conducted fairly and transparently. This was affirmed by GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj, who emphasized the necessity of executing a variety of tasks leading up to the elections, including preparing ballots and communicating necessary information.
The recent meeting held after President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s announcement was marked by a walkout from opposition-nominated commissioners. However, Gunraj and his team remain dedicated to meeting all required milestones for the elections.
