Despite growing backlash, Aubrey Norton, the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform/A Partnership for National Unity (PNC/APNU), has defended David Hinds, Co-Leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), against criticisms regarding his inflammatory comments about Afro and Indo-Guyanese who support other political factions. At a recent press conference, Norton emphatically stated, “There’s no way we will condemn David.”
Norton downplayed the controversies surrounding Hinds’ remarks, portraying him as a “passionate” and “intelligent” figure. Instead of rebuking his ally, he defended Hinds’ right to express his opinions, suggesting that conflicts arising from Hinds’ comments would be addressed as they arise.
Hinds has sparked outrage with derogatory language, including characterizing Afro-Guyanese supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) in a disparaging manner during his segment on ‘Politics 101.’ He used terms like “lick bottoms” and criticized those who have not backed black leadership within the opposition. Hinds emphasized that discussions on leadership must consider Guyana’s racial divides.
This isn’t the first time the WPA has faced scrutiny; earlier in 2023, Tacuma Ogunseye, a party member, was involved in legal issues for allegedly inciting racial hatred. His comments at a public rally reflected similar divisive sentiments, highlighting ongoing tensions within Guyanese politics.
