On Monday, the Organisation of American States (OAS) formalized its agreement with the Government of Guyana to deploy an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) for the upcoming General and Regional Elections set for September 1, 2025.
This agreement was signed at the OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, by OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin and Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the OAS, Samuel Hinds. In a press briefing, Secretary General Ramdin reiterated the OAS’s enduring dedication to promoting democratic governance not just in Guyana, but throughout the Americas.
“This marks the seventh time the OAS is observing elections in Guyana, highlighting that democracy remains vibrant and is being fortified in the nation,” noted Ramdin. He emphasized that the OAS’s electoral missions aim to provide constructive feedback rather than criticism, offering actionable suggestions that bolster public trust and strengthen institutions.
Ambassador Hinds expressed his gratitude for the OAS’s assistance, reaffirming Guyana’s commitment to conducting elections that are both transparent and credible. He acknowledged that democracy is vital for the nation’s development, security, and respect for human rights.
Since 1997, the OAS has overseen six electoral events in Guyana. Notably, Bruce Golding will return as Chief of Mission, continuing from his role in 2020.
