Guyana’s opposition is reeling from a bitter dispute that has left the country without a unified front in Parliament. The Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has decided to go it alone after talks with the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party failed to materialize.
APNU’s Chief Whip, Ganesh Mahipaul, revealed in a statement that the party had sought to collaborate with WIN to effectively hold the ruling People’s Progressive Civic (PPP/C) Administration accountable. However, months of negotiations yielded little result.
The decision leaves APNU without a shadow cabinet and has raised questions about its ability to mount an effective opposition.
WIN, on the other hand, has been criticized for being unresponsive to calls for unity. Its leader, Azurdin Hoosein, is facing legal jeopardy and has been accused of protecting himself rather than working towards the betterment of Guyana.
