As the Guyanese Opposition prepares to elect its new Leader, a watchdog group is sounding the alarm on the potential risks of choosing Azruddin Mohamed, who faces multiple U.S. indictments. The Association for Democracy and Human Rights Guyana has warned that selecting Mohamed would be a ‘reckless choice’ with severe consequences for the country’s reputation and democratic institutions.
The group emphasizes that democracy is not just about numbers and votes, but also about moral fortitude, decency, honesty, and respect for institutions. They caution the 29 Opposition Members of Parliament against creating a burden for themselves and a stain on the nation by making the wrong choice.
Historical records will not be kind to such a decision, and the group urges the Opposition to ‘open their eyes,’ reject the spectacle, and do what is right. They advocate for real representation, not reckless symbolism, moral compromise, or leadership that would embarrass Parliament internationally.
