During a recent press conference at Freedom House, Georgetown, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), criticized the opposition for making unrealistic promises aimed at winning votes, including billion-dollar giveaways. He accused opposition factions of engaging in irresponsible populism, emphasizing that their extravagant claims lack any economic foundation.
Dr. Jagdeo recalled the opposition’s 2015 manifesto, which contained lofty pledges that ultimately resulted in significant job losses and numerous taxes during their governance. With elections approaching, he expressed concern that the opposition is repeating these tactics without providing a viable economic framework to support their claims.
In sharp contrast, Dr. Jagdeo lauded the PPP for its pragmatic approach, pointing to the creation of over 60,000 new jobs since 2020, the doubling of old-age pensions, and the provision of scholarships for nearly 30,000 students. He asserted that the PPP’s promises are rooted in the tangible improvements experienced by Guyanese families.
The PPP/C’s upcoming 2025-2030 Manifesto is depicted as a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing economic growth, job creation, and improving citizen welfare. It includes specific initiatives for women, persons with disabilities, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, the party aims to reduce taxes, particularly for four-door pickups, and enhance infrastructure, underscoring its commitment to genuine progress rather than superficial promises.
