In a recent press conference, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), criticized the opposition for their sudden support of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), despite previously undermining it during their tenure. Ahead of the upcoming elections, the opposition has pledged to allocate a larger share of carbon credit funds directly to Indigenous communities.
Jagdeo labeled their actions as “shameless” and “dishonest,” emphasizing that the opposition, while in office, failed to generate any revenue from environmental initiatives and ultimately replaced the LCDS with the ineffective Green State Development Strategy (GSDS), which did not yield any clear benefits for the country.
He remarked that while the PPP/C government resumed work on the LCDS after taking office in 2020, the previous administration’s plans fell short, costing time and resources. Under the LCDS, 15% of carbon credit funds are allocated to Amerindian communities, with reports indicating they have received over 20% in the first three years, translating into substantial financial support for local villages.
Furthermore, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted ongoing investments aimed at safeguarding coastal regions of Guyana from flooding and enhancing agricultural opportunities, demonstrating the government’s commitment to community improvement.
He suggested that the opposition’s recent concern for Amerindian issues could be a reaction to their disappointing rally turnout in Bartica, indicating a desperate attempt for credibility.
