Paul Williams, a former Deputy Police Commissioner, has expressed a long-held desire to take on a leadership role within the People’s National Congress (PNC), part of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). According to Williams, his aspirations were hindered when he was passed over for the top police position.
During a recent APNU rally in Melanie, Williams, originating from Beterverwagting on the East Coast, announced his readiness to demonstrate that the opposition possesses capable leaders. He passionately stated, “I was waiting for the opportunity to finish my service and now to step up to show that we have leaders,” eliciting enthusiastic reactions from attendees.
Framing his shift into politics as a commitment to the public, he declared, “What I’ve sacrificed myself for… is for the people.” However, Williams defended unrest tied to protests across the nation, alleging that certain criminal acts resulted from intentional provocations.
According to him, the police leadership he previously served under allowed protests to turn into violence and looting as part of a scheme to tarnish community reputation and undermine the opposition. He urged supporters to discern these ‘traps’ meant to label them as criminals, asserting that authorities could have better preempted the unrest.
As a recently introduced figure on APNU’s candidacy list, Williams is stepping into the political arena with intent and a vision for change.
