The stage is set for China’s AI industry to take a giant leap forward with the launch of an open architecture for AI computing. This collaborative project, spearheaded by over 20 companies from across the AI spectrum, aims to create a unified platform that tackles the country’s persistent challenges in high-end computing power and fragmented ecosystem.
The ‘Android way’ for AI refers to a development model where a foundational platform is made accessible to a diverse range of players, much like Android’s core operating system. This approach encourages collaboration among chipmakers, software developers, and other stakeholders to work towards a standardized platform.
The initiative promises to accelerate technological progress, reduce costs, and boost China’s thriving smartphone industry. The companies involved plan to release technologies across multiple layers of AI, including components, systems, infrastructure, software, and data sets. This move aims to lower the R&D barrier for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Chinese supercomputer manufacturer Sugon took the lead in opening up their capabilities on AI storage optimization, design specifications for liquid cooling, and the DeepAI software stack. The company’s commitment to this open ecosystem is a significant step forward, with over 20 large-scale computing clusters built over the last decade and more than 500,000 accelerator cards deployed.
