The government of Guyana is considering the construction of a “premier” museum at the currently neglected D’urban Park site, as hinted by President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Friday. Speaking during the inauguration of the Jewelz by King’s Hotel, he elaborated on the government’s vision for revitalizing the capital city and bolstering the tourism industry.
Dr. Ali described the D’urban Park area, which is in close proximity to the presidential office, as an opportunity for a grand national museum that would embody and celebrate the nation’s identity. He referred to the site as an “eyesore” that demands transformation.
The D’urban Park project had initially been part of the former APNU+AFC government’s ambitious plans, but its execution fell short, resulting in poorly constructed wooden stands and stages costing $1 billion. Recently, Guyana’s Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who is also the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), mentioned intentions to renovate the facility if his party secures re-election in upcoming September polls.
