A suspect implicated in the murder of a South African university student has died following a violent encounter with police.
The lifeless body of Olorato Mongale was discovered on Sunday in Lombardy, located north of Johannesburg, just hours after she went missing during a date.
In the early hours of Friday, law enforcement officers located the main suspect at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti. According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the suspect opened fire on officers, who retaliated, resulting in his death.
The tragic incident surrounding Ms. Mongale has ignited a significant conversation regarding the alarming levels of violence against women in South Africa.
Meanwhile, the search is ongoing for two additional suspects believed to be linked to the case. Authorities have also taken into custody the parents of the deceased suspect, as the mother is accused of assisting him in evading capture by alerting him to the police’s presence at their home. Furthermore, it has been noted that the suspect’s father owns a VW Polo vehicle that reportedly played a role in Ms. Mongale’s murder.
