The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration is committed to enhancing the nation’s infrastructure, and General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has revealed plans for new public transport initiatives.
During a recent press conference, Jagdeo emphasized the government’s significant investment in road construction and upgrades since 2020, which have been essential due to the increasing number of vehicles. To address this challenge, traffic management enhancements, including the introduction of new speed cameras, have already been initiated.
However, Jagdeo recognized the necessity of improving public transport and indicated that the party is revisiting a previously considered proposal: establishing a light rail line connecting Golden Grove and Diamond, home to approximately 300,000 residents. Additionally, an electric tram system in Central Georgetown could facilitate smoother travel within the city.
“This concept allows for the possibility of developing off-site parking and utilizing rail transit to access the city,” Jagdeo elaborated. While the PPP/C is taking a serious look at these transport strategies, he cautioned that no definitive plans have been made just yet.
