Activists from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) have lodged a formal complaint with the police following an incident involving supporters of the newly established WIN party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed. The confrontation, captured on video, shows WIN supporters tearing down PPP flags from a vehicle and discarding them on the ground.
According to Guyana’s key electoral legislation, the Representation of the People Act, such disorderly conduct at political events is deemed an illegal practice. The PPP activists have condemned the actions as “provocation and intimidation,” claiming that they reflect a troubling pattern reminiscent of previous encounters involving the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
During this incident, Mohamed, who is the presidential candidate for the WIN party, allegedly encouraged his supporters to disrupt the PPP’s activities. In light of this, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has reminded political leaders of their responsibility to foster an environment of respect and unity leading up to and during the electoral process. They emphasized the importance of urging supporters to avoid any acts of provocation and hostility.
In addition to the police report, the PPP has also reached out to the ERC regarding the matter, seeking further action and resolution.
